I am often asked how I create a certain fragrance for candles, so I am going to clarify and explain the difference of Fragrant Oils used for Candle making and Car Diffusers and the Essential Oils that I use in all my Natural/Organic products, Room Sprays and Bath Bombs.
The processes used to extract essential oils from a plant or tree are many and varied. Additionally very costly. Example; Rose essential oil is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market. You may have noticed that Rose Essential Oil is sold in a carrier of Jojoba Oil with 3% of Rose Oil, this is to make it affordable to buy and yet it is still expensive.
100% Rose Essential Oil is called Rose Absolute. The method to extract Rose Absolute oil is called the Enfleurage Method. Fresh blooms are collected in the morning and placed on a plate with a very thin layer of pure odourless fat over them. Left for 48 hours, this is repeated over and over again until the fat is saturated with the rose oil. Alcohol is then added, when the alcohol has completely evaporated we are left with Pure Rose Absolute essential oil. This was the old fashioned way and a different method is now used to speed up the process. So I hope this gives you an understanding of why certain essential oils are very expensive.
If I were to make candles using essential oils they would be unaffordable, so we are very lucky to have some great scientists who have created synthetic Fragrant Oils that smell just like the real thing! Additionally in Australia we have very strict and complex safety precautions that must be adhered to for anyone producing or reproducing products with Essential Oils and Fragrant Oils.
We are all quite conscious of sustainability and when I studied for my certificate I learnt that some trees have to be very mature before the oil can be extracted from them.
I choose Essential Oils for my natural products because I want to offer a product that is free of synthetic matter. I choose dried organic flowers and teas in my bath bombs instead of colours for personal reasons.
I have also moved to glass bottles for my room sprays, so that they can be repurposed by the owner or bought back for a refill at a lesser cost so long it's the same scent.
Plastic whilst cheaper absorbs the scent.
Love my rose bath bombs and I indulged last night with candles burning and complete silence.
Much love and I hope this has been educational for you all.
